Superheavy Magnetic Monopoles
Richard A. Carrigan, Jr.; W. Peter Trower
Scientific American, April 1982, pp. 106-118
Even though P. A. M. Dirac showed in 1931 that the existence of magnetic monopoles could explain certain properties of electrically charged particles, monopoles have never been detected. However, recent gauge theories of elementary particles not only predict the existence of monopoles but determine some of their properties.
